Mental Health and Wellbeing
At St Mary’s Priory, we aim to create an open-door culture that allows all to express a range of positive and negative emotions and to work collaboratively as one community to support each other. St Mary’s is a 'telling school’. All pupils and adults should be able to tell someone they trust and know that incidents will be dealt with promptly and effectively. Children are encouraged to identify 5 trusted adults within school and at home, who they can speak to if they have any concerns or worries or if they have seen something happen to somebody else.
Targeted Support
There is support in school from external services and staff discuss needs with the Inclusion and Mental Health Lead to work out the best place to refer. In school, we have an art therapist, who works on site. She works three days per week with children across the whole school, either in small groups or 1:1. Staff and the Senior Leadership Team signpost children to this service and the art therapist also provides support for parents/carers.
We also have a pastoral mentor, who forms part of our mental health and wellbeing team, who works one day a week in school with children across the whole school.
We are a 'Trailblazers' school
Trailblazers is a partnership of Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs: a workforce which began in early 2019). Trailblazers work within Haringey schools to raise the profile of mental health, promoting and delivering early intervention and prevention. Trailblazers is made up of wellbeing workers and mental health professionals, who support emotional wellbeing and deliver interventions for children, young people and parents.
Schools play an important role in supporting the wellbeing of children and young people at a time when they are experiencing lots of physical, emotional and social changes. For some children, this stage of growing up can sometimes become overwhelming or difficult to manage, and it can be made worse by life events such as changing schools, exams, challenging home circumstances, bullying or difficult friendships. It is our job to support our children in their times of need.
Trailblazers have supported many of our children at St Mary’s. They can provide group sessions, one-to-one sessions, and sessions for parents and families on a number of issues, such as anxiety, challenging behaviour and friendships.
We will be holding termly coffee mornings for you to come and find out more about what Trailblazers can offer. Look on the website calendar and in our newsletter for more details.
Community Support
Trailblazers work with St Mary’s Priory one afternoon per week. Trailblazers is a team of wellbeing workers, mental health professionals and other partners who support the emotional wellbeing of children, young people and parents. Trailblazers work within selected Haringey schools, raising the profile of mental health, offering a service to talk and get further support if needed.
